Course Description

Over the last decade, a number of wearable devices has been developed to support humans undergoing medical treatment or physical therapy  (Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, knee injury, hip replacement surgery). For example, KneeHapp is a bandage that provides live feedback to patients with a knee injury while they exercise at home (see video and article).

The goal of this course is to review existing literature on wearable devices designed for patients. The focus is on signal processing and machine learning methods for extracting patterns from sensor data.

Prerequisites

You have experience in: 

  • machine learning
  • embedded software development
  • signal processing
  • wearable and mobile computing

You have sufficient knowledge in the English language to read and understand a scientific publication.

Application 

Please have a look at the slides of the info meeting (to be uploaded after the meeting). Attendance to the info meeting is not mandatory but strongly recommended. The application to this course happens in the following steps:

  1. Send an email to juan.haladjian (at) in.tum.de with your motivation to participate in the project (2-4 sentences), the previous courses you have taken at our chair and your TUM grades report. (latest July 4, 2018)
  2. Give a priority to the seminar through the matching system of the faculty. (from June 29 until July 4, 2018)
  3. We inform you about your application. (until July 18, 2018)

Based on past experience, many students are expected to apply for this seminar. This seminar has 10 places available. Applicants are encouraged to provide a well-structured and elaborate motivational statement.

Grading

The final grade consists of 50% for the seminar paper, 40% for the final presentation, and 10% review of another student's work.
